Last Sunday, Pastor Dave gave us a dynamic start to our new sermon series, The Gospel of Mark: Who is Jesus? Part 1. This series will take a deep dive into the entire book of Mark. To help us gain a clear understanding throughout the study, Pastor Dave has provided a devotional guide. You can access the link to the guide below.

In his introduction to the series, "The Good News Starts Here," Pastor Dave highlighted how Mark differs from the other Gospels. Instead of opening with history or genealogy, Mark jumps straight into the action, declaring from the very beginning that Jesus is the Good News. Within the first chapter, Mark introduces John the Baptist, recounts Jesus being tempted by Satan, and immediately shows Jesus preaching.

Mark offers a broad perspective on the life of Christ, moving fluidly from the global scale to the deeply personal. He also reminds us that Jesus didn't wait for a perfect world to start His ministry. Just as there was political and cultural turmoil during Jesus' time on earth, we face challenges today—meaning we don't need to wait for the world to be perfect to share the Good News and preach the Gospel. Through Mark, we will discover Jesus’ true identity and His mission so that we can learn how to respond accordingly.

This week, we move into Week 2 of the series, A New Authority (Part 1). The Gospel of Mark shows us that Jesus gets to work right away, calling His first disciples—Simon, Andrew, James, and John—to follow Him.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the sheer power of Jesus’ authority. With just a word, He compelled these men to leave their families, their businesses, their familiar ways of life, and even their hometowns behind. While we are blessed as believers who believe without seeing, imagine the weight of the authority of Jesus Christ standing right in front of you, telling you to follow Him.



Let His power enter your heart today. Close your eyes, picture His tangible authority on earth, and praise Him as He reigns in heaven. Let us thank Him for His willingness to die for our sins, and most importantly, let us respect and submit to His ultimate authority.

WPC PERSON OF THE WEEK

Hailey Rohde partnered together with her husband, Dave Rohde, to serve here at WPC for the past eight years.  She and WPC member Katelin Blum started, “Moment for Moms”, a women’s group dedicated to supporting mothers of toddlers and their families. This ministry has recently evolved into WPC Women, expanding its mission to support all women within the church community.

Born and raised in La Jolla, California, Hailey grew up in the Presbyterian church. At age 14, she met Dave at a church youth group. Although they attended different high schools, they began dating. Dave would even leave his high school campus during lunch to visit Hailey so they could spend quality time together.

Hailey graduated from high school and attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington, earning a degree in Elementary Education and Literature. She then returned to the San Diego area to begin her teaching career while completing her master’s degree at the University of San Diego. A month after her graduation, she and Dave were married.

The couple received their first call to ministry in Malawi, Africa, doing mission work for the Lingadzi Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), where they spent a year preaching and teaching the Gospel. Their second call brought them to a Presbyterian church in Huntington Beach, California, during which time they welcomed their three children. Their third call happily led them to our wonderful WPC family.

Throughout these transitions, Hailey worked as a substitute teacher and an academic specialist. Today, she serves as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator in Newbury Park.

In her rare spare time, Hailey loves long-distance running, volunteering, and coaching her children's sports teams and activities.

What she loves most about WPC is our vibrant, intergenerational faith and culture, where members of all ages connect, grow, and spend meaningful time together.
